Sugarcane tableware is based on the concept of a "circular economy." It utilizes recycled sugarcane bagasse after sugar production, undergoing processes including pulping, molding, trimming, and UV sterilization to create a physical mesh structure without the need for chemical adhesives. This gives agricultural waste—sugarcane bagasse—new value and allows it to be used in our lives in a new way. Therefore, sugarcane tableware itself is free of PFAS and BPA.
However, several points need to be noted:
PFAS is a collective term for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a large family of thousands of synthetic chemicals. It is used for oil, water, and stain repellency and is known as a "permanent chemical" due to its extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds. It is extremely difficult to decompose naturally in the environment, exhibiting persistence and bioaccumulation. Since sugarcane bagasse is a natural material, it should not contain PFAS unless treated with PFAS-containing substances during the production process (but this is not standard practice).
"BPA" stands for Bisphenol A. Bisphenol A (BPA), short for sugarcane bagasse, is a common industrial chemical used in plastics, resins, and coatings. It is endocrine disruptive and may pose potential health risks. While sugarcane bagasse tableware itself is BPA-free, it's crucial to ensure it's free from BPA contamination before use.
Production Process: Sugarcane bagasse tableware undergoes several processes before molding, requiring that these processes ensure the tableware remains unaffected. If special coatings (coatings), waterproofing, or oil-repellent agents are added, it's essential to ensure these products meet food safety requirements.
Laws and Regulations: Sugarcane bagasse tableware products must comply with the food safety regulations and standards of the markets where they are sold. Some markets explicitly restrict or prohibit the presence of harmful substances such as bisphenol A (BPA) and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food contact products.
Certification: Many sugarcane bagasse manufacturers have tested their tableware and issued reports confirming it is fluorine-free. Some markets do not explicitly require certification or testing reports, but the tableware must still be fluorine-free and BPA-free.
