EU parliament approves ban on single use plastics

The European Parliament and March 27, 2019 finally approved a new law prohibiting the use of disposable plastic products. The directive was approved with 560 votes in favor, 35 votes against and 28 abstentions.

Disposable plastic products will be banned in the EU in 2021: disposable plastic tableware (forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks), disposable plastic plates, plastic straws, plastic stick cotton swabs, plastic balloon sticks, degradable plastic, food containers and plastic cup.

By 2029, member states must recycle 90% of plastic bottles. In addition, plastic bottles must contain at least 25% recycled content by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

The agreement also adopted the principle of "whoever pollutes pays", extending responsibility to producers. This new system will be suitable for discarding cigarette butts and fishing gear at random. And producers should bear the cost of recycling.

The new rule also stipulates that warning labels are mandatory on tobacco packaging to indicate that littering of cigarette butts will have an impact on the environment. It is also suitable for other products such as plastic cups, wipes and sanitary napkins.
